Volume One: pp. Half title, title, 8 pages of contents. +358. c.21 x 12.5cm. The Chart and the plates are ALL LACKING. Generally SOILED and STAINED throughout but the text is complete. The lower boards is also lacking and the front board and the spine are very worn (please see the images). Volume Two: Title and 4 pages contents (the half title is lacking) + 348 (the last blank). c.21 x 13cm. LACKING all but one of the plates (see image) but the text is complete. Bound in full contemporary calf which is worn, particularly the spine, though the title label is still present. Several pages are working loose as is one gathering, but the pages in the second volume are largely clean. There is a contemporary, or near contemporary, ink signature on the free front end paper of volume 2 \"Thomas Hardy R.N. The gift of a friend\" (see image). Let us not speculate!Two \'odd\' volumes brought together and in variant bindings. See Holmes: Captain James Cook ... Bibliography ... item 41 for the first edition of the Ellis which coincides closely with this third edition.

This volume and others currently offered were \'rescued\' some years ago from the remaining stock of an \'old\' print dealer who had removed the plates, maps and charts for sale separately. In most cases the text was found to be complete so they are worth preserving for that reason. The volumes were all published in the 18th. century, most are concerned with the \'South Seas\', and were they in fine complete condition would be highly collectable and valuable. The copies here are, sadly, no more than just the text.
