Native American Hopi Toad Hopi Pueblo Story Doll Pottery Storyteller 6 Children:

Listed today is a Hopi Pueblo Storydoll made and signed by the artist Melena. The piece has also been signed with a Pictogram (a symbol for a word or phrase used as the earliest known form of writing). Could be her Indian or tribe name. This particular Storydoll has six children and measures 4 1/2\" tall x 3 1/2\" wide x 4 1/4\" deep. The Storydoll is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Smoke-free home. I bought this in the early 80’s while driving from California to New Mexico. It’s been tucked away in a box for a very, very long time. Included is the product card that came with the storydoll which reads:

Indian figurative pottery is one of the oldest forms of images of themselves, their gods, and animals around them, taking place of the cameras they didn’t have. This form of art is found in all pre-historic pueblo culture and dates back to 300 AD. Most figures were used for ceremonial purposes.

The most common known today was started in 1950 and is referred to as “The Singing Mothers” for female figures and “Storyteller” for male figures.

The original doll was a replica of the potters grandfather who told traditional stories to his grand-children and the pueblo people to bring and keep them together.

These potteries are significant statements of person and cultural experience.
