Around 1865, a Navajo Blacksmith Atsidi Sani who admired the silver adornments that the Spaniards and their horses had. Atsidi Sani got the Spaniards to teach him how to work with silver and began making silver conchos. This was the beginning of Navajo jewelry, and soon Atsidi taught his brother and many others how to silversmith. Traditionally, Navajo jewelers made silver jewelry with just stamp work and no stones. Today, they have expanded their jewelry making techniques and they create beautiful jewelry using sand casting, stone inlay, and overlay.
