Philadelphia: L. R. Hamersley & Co., 1885. First trade edition. Octavo (standard size). Slight wear to edges and corners of boads, with a bit more wear to lower edges and corners. Head of spine bumped. Slight soiling to edges of textblock. Small cracking in the paper at first hinge. Emboss of former owner on fleyleaf, with a small hole. 443 p. w/ fold out map, appendices, index. Map has a small tear near hinge extending but a little into the edge of the map. Originally done as a report for Gen. Phil Sheridan, West Point graduate Clark was in a good position to know his subject. He was a 2nd Lieutenant of the 2nd US Cavalry Regiment and participated in the latter stages of the Great Sioux War on staff with Crook . While there he spent a good deal of time with the Native Americans scouts, and traveled even further among various tribes in preparation of his report. This edition of the book was published just after the death of the author at age 39 to much acclaim and is still considered the definitive book on the subject. Very Good. No dust jacket issued.
