Vintage dry glass plate negative, photographer\'s #1522, 1917. In good condition and well detailed as shown; some light emulsion fading visible around the edges; plate has no chips or cracks; about 6 1/2\" x 8 1/2\". The overall positive and negative scans in this listing are at a low resolution; the details are shown from a higher resolution look at the image. There is no print with this negative; for reference, I\'ve shown the entry for this image from the photographer\'s log book - not included in the sale.Howard Clinton Tibbitts (1863-1937) was a San Francisco based photographer. Starting in 1892, he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 40 years. He photographed extensively in the American West, Canada, and Mexico, documenting landscapes, towns, industry, agriculture, parks, public buildings, and other local scenes to help promote Southern Pacific\'s passenger service. His work was showcased in the railroad\'s magazine SUNSET starting with first publication in 1898.

Tibbitts\' photographs are in the collections of the University of California’s BancroftLibrary, the California State Railroad Museum, the California HistoricalSociety, and many other museums and institutions. While much of his work hasbeen published over the years in books, periodicals, and as postcard images, this negative comes from a long time privately held estate archive of his work fromc.1905-1925.

Over the next few months, I plan to be offering many diverse H. C. Tibbitts glass plate negatives, along with some prints, from this collection.

Glass Plate Negatives: Prior to acetate, camera negatives were made on thin glass with an added emulsion layer. While now antique historic records, glass plates are still valid print making elements 100 years later. Two contemporary printing methods:

1. ANALOG: traditional wet darkroom printing in contact (print is same size as the negative) or enlarged, making a photo-chemical print.

2. DIGITAL: excellent prints can me made via a high resolution scan, then archival ink jet printing. The scan creates a digital file; after desired clean up and re-touching work, prints can be created on a wide variety of papers, finishes, tones and sizes. Large negatives like this hold up well for large prints. I work with a fine printer in Santa Fe, New Mexico who can produce high quality archival prints via scans from the Tibbitts glass plates.

This negative will be carefully packed and promptly sent worldwide to the winning buyer via Priority Mail (USA) or First Class International Package Mail; multiple purchases can be combined for one shipping cost. sale has and no \'buy it now\' option.
