Brilliant Navajo artist Melvin Francis poignantly depicts a snapshot history of the white man\'s settlement of the west from days of the wagon trains to today and successfully captures the duality of cultures that Native Americans face in the larger Anglo culture. This is one of the most interesting bracelet I\'ve ever offered, and whoever the lucky owner will literally have a one of a kind piece that evokes strong emotions.

The hand engraved story scene on a Hopi style brush finish sterling silver surface portrays the settlers, their covered wagons seemingly devoid of many possessions, and horses around a giant bonfire against the back drop of the towering rock formations in Monument Valley on what is now the Navajo reservation. In the foreground we see 19th century attired Navajo couples exchanging goods which was how Native American in the southwest conducted trade prior to the introduction of Anglo script, currency, coins, bank notes, etc. There\'s a fascinating book on the subject of Native American commerce explaining how their system worked so I\'ll not go into it here.

The inside of the bracelet says it all. Today many of he old Navajo ways have or are disappearing, and instead of the interdependence that characterized Native American tribal culture for centuries trade needs are now met by the world\'s highest grossing discount department store in the world, the Gallup, New Mexico W*a*l*m*a*r*t. Cars and trucks have replaced horses or walking transportation.

This bracelet is a modern allegory viewed not only from the perspective of changes in Navajo culture, but observes changes this transglobal mega corporation has created in society as whole and much of it, IMO, hasn\'t been been for the greater good of any of us.
