One of my favorite varieties of modern domestic turquoise isCarico Lake from north central Nevada. Its colors, matrix, and depth are simplysuperb, and it comes in an unbelievable number of colors and matrix patterns.The only problem is that the price is strictly controlled and is quiteexpensive.

Owned by a large retail establishment in Albuquerque, theowner maintains extremely tight controls over production and limits it mostlyto the artists who make the jewelry for his store with very little soldelsewhere and then only to the best artists. And what little is sold elsewhereis done in a highly selective manner so quality control standards and higherprofits are better assured. This is probably the domestic turquoise minebusiness model of the near future.

So when when you see this beautiful stone, remind yourselfthat it gets more expensive every few months as supplies of decent domesticturquoise are diminishing.

Well known Navajo artist Paul Begay is one of the privilegedfew who can obtain Carico Lake turquoise. Paul lives in Gallup and specializesin old style or revivalist Navajo jewelry. He\'s a well established artist who\'slost part of a finger for his art.

For this old style traditional six stone row bracelet withan old pawn finish (mimics the appearance and patina of aged sterling), Paulchose five medium blue and blue green (much more blue than green) naturalcabochon (domed) tones all with really great matrix and veining. The ovalcenter stone measures about 5/8ths\" by ½,\" the oval stones next tothe center stone are about 5/8ths\" by about 7/16ths\" (one is justslightly larger than the other), and the two oval end stones measure ½\" by3/8ths.\"

Paul is a minimalist, and his designs display an economical,traditional, and minimalist view point. For example, he added vertical pairs ofhand made sterling silver raindrop bead overlays between each stone and handstamped sunshine and seed overlays on the shanks next to the end stones.

This bracelet is 11/16ths\" wide in the center, and itssturdy three wire bracelet frame gradually tapers to a width of 3/8ths\" atboth reinforced terminals. It has an inside measurement of 5¾\" and acarefully adjustable opening gap of 1 and 1/8th\" making it suitable forwrists that 6¾\" to no more than 7¼\" in circumference with little orno careful adjustment of the shanks and/or terminals.
