Another Arizona mine that had turquoise with iron pyrite matrix was inKingman, Arizona. Arizona has beautiful turquoise and amazing Navajo silversmiths. Thishandsomeringis the stunning results of this great combination.
This extraordinary ring was originally purchased for a private collection here in Arizona in the 1960s. The original owner is having me act as her agent to offer these beautiful pieces to buyers.
A pleasing patina has developed across the silver highlighting the artistry. This is the top collection quality, having been shown at the influential Museum of Northern Arizona; this is an amazing find to have it on the market.
Exquisite detail and craftsmanship along with high quality stones and silver work make this a high value Navajo collectible sterling silver applique turquoise with an iron pyrite matrix ring.
Dineh (Navajo), silversmiths have had a long positive history with the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Arizona where this sterling silver applique and fantastic turquoise with iron pyrite matrix was appraised and until recently shown.
I took a ride out to the Museum and asked about the Southwest Native American artists and the relationship with the museum. The Dineh (Navajo) learned silversmithing from the Spanish in the 1860’s; the Zuni Native Americans were already working with metals and learned silversmithing from the Dineh in the 1870\'s. The Zuni taught the Hopi and in the 1930\'s the Coltons, founders of the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff started working with the Hopi to help them develop their own silversmith style.
Flagstaff is adjacent to the Dineh (Navajo) Nation and the Hopi Nation. This makes Flagstaff rich in Native American Galleries. I stopped by a gallery and spoke with a Dineh artist in residence. He explained the use of making individual layers of silver designs and placing them on the solid sterling silver base and how building up the layers adds design and dimension. It\'s a technique called applique. He pointed out that the craftsmanship and artistry in this ring is outstanding.
The artistry of this ring made in the early 1960s by a master Dineh silversmith uses materials which continue to gain in value each year.
This ring, made to bring beauty and joy to the wearer, is a living example of the Navajo concept of Walk with Beauty.
I congratulate the winner of this sale, you have acquired not only beauty, you have acquired history.
