The best reproduction First Empire lineinfantry shako you\'ll ever encounter, this M1810 example waspatterned directly from an original in the Collection Clement.

Thisexample\'s inspiration can be seen depicted in Plate 9, Infanterie,of Margerand\'s pivotal LesCoiffures de l\'Armee Francais. Bodyis of shellacked fuller\'s board, lined with shellacked burlap, andcovered with original nineteenth century black woolen broadcloth. Molded leather crown and visor, deep sweatband (size 7 3/8), hempenheadnet, black linen havelock—all the classic features are here. Less commonplace are the faded green field badge, multi-ringedmolded-leather tricolor cockade, and worsted tape V-band at crownfront. Scaled chinstrap is standard, while its securing rosettes arestamped with the flaming bomb of the regiment\'s grenadier company. Plume is outrageously long, in faded green to match the field badge. All components have been very gently aged, so this piece doesn\'t lookgarishly new: it might have seen a week\'s use in the field, or beencurated in a family chateau forthe past two centuries. A far cry from the South Asian imports, thispiece was handmade by an American master craftsman, and thedifference shows. Beautiful example.
