Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela(also affectionately known as MANDIBA)was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. His beloved biological father was Hendry Mphakanyiswa from the honorable Tembu Tribe. Mandela complemented native teachings on morality and the relevance of struggle with law studies at the University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand. He joined the emergent African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in active resistance against the ruling National Party\'s draconian and racist apartheid policies after the year 1948- when the globe was finally enjoying some peace after the Second World War. His nation put him on national trial for treason between the years 1956-1961 and he was ultimately acquitted in the year 1961.

After the banning of the African National Congress as a seemingly subversive political entity in 1960, Nelson Mandela advocated for the justification of a military wing within the ANC. In June 1961, the ANC executive considered his proposal on the use of violent tactics and agreed that those members who wished to associate themselves with Mandela\'s campaign would not be deterred. These strategic factors led to the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe. Mandela was arrested as an enemy of the state in 1962 and sentenced to five years\' imprisonment with deplorable hard labour- at times under the schorching sun. In 1963, when many fellow leaders of the ANC and the Umkhonto we Sizwe were arrested, Mandela was brought to stand trial with them for plotting a coup d\'etat to overthrow the reigning government by way of violent means. His impassioned statement from the dock received considerable international attention. On June 12, 1964, eight of the accused, including Mandiba were sentenced to life imprisonment. From 1964 to 1982, he was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison, off Cape Town. Then, he was moved to Pollsmoor Prison, closer to the mainland.

During his years in prison, Nelson Mandela\'s international reputation and influence grew incrementally. Mandela was widely accepted as the most prominent black leader in South Africa and became a powerful symbol of resistance as the anti-apartheid movement gathered strength. He consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom. John McEnroe refused to play Bjorn Borg in South Africa, Sugar Man Sixto Rodriguez\' music inspired the nation to call the establishment\'s bluff and Bruce Springsteen and socially visionary Steven van Zandt simply refused to play SUN CITY. Of course, who can forget Annie Lennox (Eurythmics) shout out as well.

Nelson Mandela was released on the historical date of February 11, 1990. After his release, he plunged himself wholeheartedly into his life\'s purpose, attempting to attain the goals he and others had set out almost four decades earlier. As Anthony Robbins noted in an interview with Charlie Rose, few have that moral stature to get out of prison for nearly 3 decades and say \"let\'s continue what we started.\" As Robbins put it, satiation took precedence. Mandela submitted the anger simply was not getting him anywhere. Similar to a rocking chair, it moves forward and backwards but you are essentially in the same location. One year before Bill Clinton took office in 1991, at the first national conference of the ANC held inside South Africa after the organization had been censored in 1960, Mandela was elected President of the ANC while his lifelong friend and colleague, Oliver Tambo, became the organization\'s National Chairperson.
