RARE FIND DUTCH WITH LID IN GREAT SHAPE

Neu Deel Economy Cookin WareHealth Reg US Pat Off

I find this “Neu Deel CookinWare” earthenware baking dish intriguing because , it has so much decoration ,anddesign for a dish with such a simple purpose. It obviously was made for use inthe oven, and has a tight-fitting lid, so I guess it could be called a dutchoven too. The bowl has molded vegetables/fruits/leaves all around the outside.About 10\" diameter x 7 3/4\" high. Has a wire handle. The lid to thepot would double as a pie pan, (10” diameter x 1 ¾” high ) I believe. Adding to its rustic appeal Interestingly, thelid is glazed on the inside and is the right shape and size for a second use asa ten-inch diameter pie plate. This large baking dish has four “feet” moldedinto the base, as well as molded rings to keep the bottom of the dish slightlyraised from the surface of the oven. The sides of the dish are covered withraised ornamental designs of branches, leaves, apples, and other fruits andvegetables. I love the look of the intricate detail of the designs.

The interior of this earthenwarebaking dish has the same cream glaze that the interior of the pie plate has. Both have an unglazed exterior that is the color of sand with small dark specksthroughout. The baking dish has a metal bail that is connected to earthenware ears.

The bottom of the baking dish hasraised lettering that reads “Neu Deel Economy Cookin Ware Health.” The bottomof the pie plate has raised lettering that reads “Neu Deel Economy Cookin WareHealth Reg US Pat Off.” The patent for this design was registered on January 2,1934 and was valid for a period of fourteen years. The designer was Warren I.Tycer of Columbus, Ohio. Included in the patent are two drawings of hisproposed design.

Many different styles of thesebaking dishes were made under this same patent. Although I have searchedthrough many sources , I have never found another one of these dishes as tallas mine (8 1/2 inches), including the dish shown in the patent sketch. I haveseen shallower dishes with portions of the ornamental design… dishes with andwithout bails and with and without feet. Apparently not all of these bakingdishes were designed with lids. (In fact, the patent drawing does not show alid.) The lids often look different too, with some having a glazed interiorwhile others do not.

The Tycer Pottery Companymanufactured earthenware cooking and dinner ware in the former pottery of F. S.Lowry (1868-1916) at Roseville, Ohio, from ca. 1921 to 1957. The firm wasperhaps best known for its \"Japaneeso\" cookware, patented in 1929,its \"Neu-Deel Cookin-Ware,\" patented in 1933, and its later barbecueware featuring a longhorn motif. In retirement Tycer returned to his Amite,Louisiana, home, where he died in 1968.
