are a favorite art form, they are used to hang food and other valued items from ceilings to keep

them safe from flooding and/or animal intruders. They are also used in ceremonial houses to hold ritual objects.

In New Guinea spiritual art, human figures are abstracted to a greater or lesser degree - elongated or distended faces

and bodies and oversized sexual organs whereas the animals may be portrayed accurately.

korowai Cult figure , Wanleg, - Korowai \" cult \" hooks are one of the most famous and sought after

of all New Guinea artifacts. On the Korowai they are called Aripa and are considered to be living

beings that heled initiate men in hunting and warfare. They are also known in Pidgin as wanlegs.

As with most hooks from the Korowai, this one was never painted.
