This is an amazing and historically interesting original document dated 12/21/1897, in fair condition with some stains. Edges look good and there are creases from the official folding but no tears that I can see. It appears to me to be an original document with the name, address, license fee of $5 and date handwritten. The signature of the Chief Clerk is probably a stamp. I like the unique subject matter of this one year license issued to one Otto A Burton residing at 21 Bowery, New York City, giving him license as a PUBLIC PEDDLER, HAWKER, VENDER OR HUCKSTER to sell merchandise from a basket for one year. Mr. Burton\'s $5 would be worth $138 now. Pretty steep cost for selling goods on the street out of a basket. The license was issued by the Mayor\'s Office Bureau of Licenses by William L. Strong, a Republican who served as the 90th Mayor of New York from 1895-1897. He was the last Mayor of New York before the Consolidation of the City of Greater New York on Jan 1, 1898 (per Wikipedia). On the back of the license you will find the city ordinances printed in four languages: English, German, Italian and Hebrew. This license is cheaply framed and will be shipped WITHOUT GLASS to prevent breakage. You should have it professionally framed with archival materials in the style of your choice. Since we are not formally framing it we will ship free. offer now to win this nice historical piece !
