We are listing these nice 1740s Georgian sterling silver bullseye sugar nips (or tea tongs, as they were called in the 1700s) by the London silversmith Ebenezer Coker. Sugar nips were the predecessors of the cast and later bow shaped tongs, which continue to the present day. The nips are marked inside each finger ring with a lion passant and a partially rubbed cursive EC maker\'s mark. This mark was registered in 1739 by London silversmith Ebenezer Coker (see page 50 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). The reference book on nips, Eighteenth Century Silver Tea Tongs (whose author also has the silverteatongs website), notes that Coker was a known maker of these pieces. The nips are over 4.25 inches long, weigh 1 ounce, have scrolled arms, chamfered shafts, simple scallop grips/bowls, and are in good repaired condition. Almost all surviving nips have been repaired (due to their fragile designs), and this pair has a repair where one shaft meets the hinge.
