This is a fabulous three piece group of a Yoruba Ceremonial Beaded Vest and two Beaded Sashes(Belts) from Southwestern Nigeria. The Yoruba Tribe of Nigeria makes these beautiful antique seed beaded vest and belts for a specific Oba and all the work is done by men. Both the front and back of this very fine vest is divided into four sections, each crisscrossed with cowrie shells. This vest has a pair of twisting red snakes, along with an abstract triangular face representing a deity. Beaded garments are made for those of royal and priestly lineage, usually worn during important ceremonial occasions. Both kings and priests are believed to have contact with the gods and with nature, acting as intermediaries between the physical and supernatural worlds. This influence is depicted in art through regalia that communicates powerful message through the vigorous interplay of symbols, forms and color. The two beaded belts with colored beads is associated with a different empowering God (Orisha). The face also represents royal ancestors who are said to watch over and protect all the royal lines. Triangles are meant to reflect sacred qualities. Birds are symbols of the mystical powers of women. A diviner is one of the very few non royal persons permitted to use solidly beaded materials.
