Beautiful piece of Indigenous Art from the Haida Nation on the Northwest Coast of British Columbia, Canada
hand crafted, carved and painted LIDDED BENTWOOD BOX by the HAIDA Nations Master carver DONAVON GATES -
Traditionally these boxes are made from a single plank which is steamed until pliable and then bent and the two ends are pinned together - there is no nail or screws been used in this box.
True Indigenous Art - it takes an excellent craftsman to make these - the carving and painting is extremely clean and detailed. The lid is stained in a dark brown, showing some lighter spots due to the natural grain and growth of the wood.
It shows the Sun on one end, the Raven on both sides and the tail of the raven on the side opposite the sun
Measurements: 14\" long, 8.25\" wide and 8.5\" high to top of lid
Born in 1954, Donavon Gates is a registered member of the Old Massett band from the Haida Gwaii islands on the north west coast of British Columbia. Through his mother’s side of the family he shares the Raven crest, which is one of the two main crests of the Haida nation. Donavon has always remained a carver at heart. Working in such mediums as wood, silver and prints his main material n the earlier days was Argillite - now he is focused on wood carvings - without loosing the skills you need for the Stone carvings. Some of the artist who taught him this craft are Eli Bell, Dilbert Bell, Hector Thompson and Maury Clark
