Here is an important and rare NWC Tlingit shaman’s bonependantdepicting a frog. Once upon a time, sometime in its old history, this pendant sharedan animal hide necklace with other pendants, animal parts, copper beads…etc…Thecomplete necklace would looked wonderful to today’s viewer, and collectively, itmust’ve been a storehouse for immense spiritual power. Unfortunately, only certainindividual components of those magnificent necklaces survive today, and thispendant, is one such survivor. The frog’s eyes would’ve contained Russian tradebeads, but sadly, those were lost long ago. Despite these shortcomings, thispendant is a beautiful specimen of shamanistic NWC art, it’s a very powerful specimen,and I am proud to be its owner for quite a few years. It now needs a new home.

As a creature that lives in two worlds, land & water, thefrog is revered for its adaptability, knowledge and power to traverse worldsand inhabit both natural and supernatural worlds. Frogs are the primary spirithelpers of shamans. A great communicator, the frog often represents the commonground or voice of the people. Frog’s sounds are believed to contain divinepower and magic. When shown in art as touching or sharing his tongue withanother creature, the frog represents an exchange of knowledge and power.”
