Here is an authentic HOPI MARAO DANCER KACHINA, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION - A WELL CARVED / PAINTED NATIVE AMERICAN COTTONWOOD KATSINA CARVING. A nice and collectible vintage, old & authentic Hopi Katsina Doll, made from solid Cottonwood. This Kachina was made by an expert HOPI maker - HAROLD SANO (see tag).

This is a fine looking Kachina, with a great workmanship, and a nice paint job, as well as expert overall carving. He is made from solid Cottonwood Tree Wood standing, at about 14\" tall, and 5\" wide at fists. There is some very minor wear to paint / feathers, yet he has all original accoutrements (rattle & antlers in hand, tripod on head w/dyed red horse hair, leather medicine bag at hip, etc.). The wool on ears and neck (ruff) is real wool dyed orange, red and green. No notable damage - I only see a crack in one foot, otherwise no cracks or breaks to limbs / body. This Kachina, as you can see from the pics, displays extremely well and is a handsome and collectible piece of Native America.

The body is carved from a single piece of the traditional Cottonwood - a tree that grows in washes and canyons where water is more consistent. Note that the wool on head is real Churro Sheep\'s HERE IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF A UNCOMMON MARAO KACHINA FROM OLD ORAIBI / ORABI! THIS IS AN AUTHENTIC HOPI KACHINA.The MaraoKachina is filled with contradictions. It is said that he originated at Zuni, but all of his regalia points to a Navajo-inspired Kachina. It wears a tripod on its head which belongs to the Mamzrau, a woman\'s society. However, beneath the headdress his cheeks carry the symbols of war. The Marao appears in Plaza Dances in the late spring. Each Mesa has its own version of this Kachina (this one is Third Mesa - OLD ORABI!!!). NOTE GALLERY / FIRST PICTURE - HE HAS ANTLERS IN HAND WITH TAG ATTACHED, I TOOK THE ANTLERS OUT OF HIS GRIP TO PHOTO TAG AND FORGOT TO PUT THEM BACK IN HIS HAND FOR SEVERAL PICS. THIS KACHINA COMES WITH THE WHITE WOOD CARVED ANTLERS IN HIS HAND AND THE TAG. ON THE OTHER SIDE OF TAG NOT PHOTOGRAPHED IT STATES \" carved and painted by a master Hopi Kachina carver/maker - Hopituh Shimunuh!!!

Excellent condition for age and a true Collector\'s item!!!!
