This is an original not a copy of a hand written report by Master Clayton S. Richman USN. It was produced on board the \" USS Adams \" while the United States Ship was at sea in the \" SAMOA ISLANDS \" in 1878. The ship was under the command of Commander Frederick Rodgers for whom the report was made. The nine page hand written first hand report covers the zoology, birds ,animals, fish etc. for the islands. Probably the most interesting part of the report is the last four pages which he covered the islanders food source, preparation and cooking which is very interesting. Remember this is almost 140 years ago. The captain of the ship... Rodgers.. went on to become a Real Admiral while Richmond went on to become a Commander. I am also enclosing a letter dated 1888 from then Commander C. S. Richman, who was on the USS Independence at the time, requesting Rodgers help him to be appointed ...The Adjutant General. This in itself is interesting letter describing the existing political conditions in the Navy at the time. I am also enclosing to demonstrate another cross reference point in C.S. Richman\'s and the Admiral\'s career when he was serving on board the USS New Hampshire in the Navy Yard off Norfork in 1875. He\'s writing Commander Rogers a report on what he is sending him while Rogers was in command of the USS Despatch. Also enclosed is the history of the above mentioned three ships taken from the Internet.
These documents come out of the Admiral\'s private papers. The last item is a reproduced photo of the USS Adams. She was built in 1874 by Donald McKay at Boston. All told a nice grouping of naval history documents.
