Up for offer is an original Ames Cabotville 1846 dated Model 1840 Wristbreaker United States heavy cavalry sword. The sword measures 43 inches while in scabbard. Blade itself measures 35.75 inches in length. The sword is in very solid untouched original condition. The cutting edge of blade exhibits some minor scratches from a light period sharpening and a few small dings with scattered light oxidation in areas with no pitting or major problems. Blade is tight to hilt with no wobble or play. The brass has a very dark uncleaned patina. The wooden handle has some wear and a few age cracks with a nice old patina. The brass wire handle wrap is intact although the leather is missing and has deteriorated over time. The scabbard retains period black paint with some oxidation and pitting towards drag. The scabbard fits the blade like a glove and is certainly original to the sword. Overall, a very solid old Mexican War Cabotville. This is a fairly scarce 1846 dated Ames cavalry sword. The original government contract called for Ames to produce 4,000 of these swords in 1846, but only 2,400 were delivered. Hard to say how many are still out there of the 2,400 produced.Guaranteed absolutely 100% authentic in every regard.
