This original model 1860 U.S. Navy Cutlass Sword was madeby Ames MFG.CO in Chicopee, Mass. The cutlass sword has the issue date of 1862 stamped into the riccasso of the blade.This cutlass sword has had the solid brass knuckle guard removed at some point in it\'s long life. Removal of theknuckle guardwas sometimes done to accommodate a large hand. From the looks of the rivet holes and the tarnish and patina around themit was removed a very long time ago. It has been documented that some of these model 1860 cutlass swords were even on board U.S. Navy ships when WWII broke out. That is quite a long service history. The leather grip is tight but there are dry areas on it. There isno grip wire as is common on these cutlass swords as it was often removed when it became loose.The markings on the brass crossguard are 12M 998. All the brass has a great dark patina and has not been cleaned. The blade is very nice but does show many little fine marks and it has some very tiny flea nicks along the cutting edge where it saw service. This cutlass sword DOES NOT COME WITH A SCABBARD. The cutlass sword measures from tip to pommel approx.32 1/4 inches or 82 cm and the blade alone is approx 26 inchesor 66 cm. This cutlass sword is a really nice exampleas it has it\'s full character intact.
