DescriptionThis isan ORIGINAL Viven-Bessières (\"VB\")rifle grenade vest developed during WWI for the carrying of VB rifle grenades by the \"Doughboys\" of the U.S. American Expeditionary Force in France. The VB rifle grenade, developed by the French Army, was also adopted by the U.S. Army and issued to rifle grenadiers with a discharger cup which was modified for attachment to the muzzles of the M1917 and M1903 rifles. The 11-pocket vest was intended for wear on the rifle grenadier\'s chest suspended by the large strap for the neck and straps at each corner to be tied around the torso. Each of the pocket flaps are secured bya Carr \"Durable Dot\" snap (see close-up image above). The vest is ingood condition with soiling on the back and isstamped on the back (see image) with aApril 1918 date. The vest was later used by members of Carlson\'s Raiders during the famous Makin Island Raid to carry Mk. I \"frag\" grenades and was alsoutilized by the Marine Raiders to carry extra ammo for their rifles.
