This photo is an excellent quality, sharp and clear black & white 8x10 glossy new photo reproduction of a 1930s MACK Model BX Tractor and Refrigerated Semi-Trailer operated by OVERNIGHT MOTOR TRANSPORTATION CO. of Richmond, VA.

”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image. Laying the “SAMPLE” sheet over the photo for the scan, causes the image to be slightly yellowed. Your photo reproduction will be pure black & white with no yellow cast.

DESCRIPTION: This BX MACK #81 in the Overnight fleet, is pulling a refrigerated semi-trailer fleet #T-21. The sides of the trailer advertise “Thermostat Controlled Refrigeration” with the illustration of a white polar bear standing on an ice flow, with the ad line: “It’s Cold enough for Me”, and noting that Overnight provided service to New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore & Washington. An ice bunker door can be seen on the front lower corner of the trailer. My original photo appears to be a factory original photo taken by Leopold of Baltimore, complete with the Serial No. of BX1034M827, and has a white border on all 4 sides.

MACK BX SERIES: A completely new series of high speed 6-cylinder Mack trucks was introduced in 1928 with the BJ. In 1932 the heavy duty BX was introduced as a 4-6 ton truck with a 104-hp engine and dual reduction rear end, later replaced with the 117-hp CF engine. Overall some 3,032 BX Macks were produced from 1932 to 1940.

OVERNIGHT MOTOR TRANSPORTATION CO.: Overnight Transportation Co. was founded by J. Harwood Cochrane in 1935, beginning his operation with one piece of equipment. A thriving business was built by keeping operating costs below most of the competition, along with the acquisition of a number of other carriers. In 1986 Overnight was purchased by Union Pacific Corp. By 1990 Overnight operated over 20,000 pieces of equipment, serving more than 35,000 points from over 150 terminals in 41 states and Canada, making it the 4th largest LTL carrier in the nation. In August 2005 Overnight Transportation was acquired by UPS Freight, in April/May 2006 Overnight became UPS Ground Freight, Inc. with new equipment becoming UPS Brown, leaving the blue and grey colors of Overnight. Another famous carrier gone from the highways, but not from our memories.
