For sale is a Melanesian painted war shield from the Atjamets village, central Asmat of Papua New Guinea.

The shield is 71 X 13 inches and in very good condition with just one minor age crack at the bottom and it does warp slightly.

The war shield of the Asmat is one of the most elaborately decorated objects from this area: The decoration of the shield is for more important than its defensive properties. This shield is a fine example from the mid 20th century.
