Composition: Copper-plated zinc (.992 zinc, .008 copper core, with a plating of pure copper). Diameter: 19 mm. Weight: 2.5 grams. Edge: Plain.
The Lincoln cent was the first circulating U.S. coin to portray a specific individual. It was introduced in 1909 for the centennial of Lincoln\'s birth. Victor David Brenner designed the portrait of our 16th president. His initials V.D.B. have appeared since 1918 as minute letters on the truncation of the shoulder.
In 1959 Brenner\'s original reverse design was replaced in recognition of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln\'s birth. The new reverse shows the Lincoln Memorial and is the work of Frank Gasparro. His initials FG appear at the lower right corner of the building.
The letter D for Denver appears beneath the date. No mintmark appears on the coins struck at Philadelphia. Specially made Proof coins have the letter S beneath the date.
During 1982 the metallic content changed from 95% copper to a lighter weight copper-plated zinc and the obverse design was modified making the date, motto, and legend slightly smaller.
In 2009 the Memorial reverse design was updated to honor the bicentennial of Lincoln\'s birth.
