Old Antique Us American Eagle Head Artillery Officers Sword Saber 1821 -1850:
I bought this yesterday. The man said that he bought it from the owner of an old house here in Virginia. The man found it in a crawl space under the house.
I know that this predates the war between the states, but at least here in the south our men folk fought with whatever they had so it's very possible that it was used during the war. Plus the fact that it was hidden beneath the house is another good indicator that it would have been used during the war. When I pushed him to where the house is, he totally clammed up, guess he taught I might try to buy other things from the owner of the house.
The blade is rusty, but not as bad as most dug pieces that I've seen. The grip is long gone except for the wood, same for the scabbard tip (at least the scabbard is still with the sword).
I leave most things as I find them, so I didn't try to clean it. The scabbard has a couple of dents and a crack under one dent.
It measures 37 inches long, the blade is about 31 1/2 inches. The hand guard has a Lion's face in the middle and the cross guard has an animals face at each end. The clam shell is gorgeous with a seated liberty holding a pole with the liberty cap on top and a shield in her other hand. There is also an eagle with wings spread and a shield on his chest. Also some other implements, but I'm not sure what they are.
I can't find this exact sword, but it appears to be an early officers sword judging from the ones that I did find. Insured shipping will be $20.00 in the continental U.S. Outside the U.S. will be extra.
