Sterling is required by law to be marked \"sterling\" or \"925\". Native American artists were exempt from the marking requirements because their jewelry was usually not sold for cash. It was primarily used for gifts and personal use, as well as bartering. Once the bartering eventually progressed into pawning, the government recognized the art jewelry as having cash value and therefore was required to be marked \"sterling\". The Native American artists slowly began marking the metal content in the 1930\'s and by the 1940\'s & 50\'s, it became common practice, so this piece likely predates that timeframe.
