In 1892, French Creek overflowed in Meadville, Pennsylvania creating much damage to the banks it flooded. B.L. Singley, a recent graduate of nearby Allegheny College, photographed hundreds of images to keep. He mounted them on cardboard cards and labeled them \"Keystone View Company\". By 1895, the company had over 700 different photographs. In 1898, the company started selling stereoscopes.
The total length is about 14\". It is made completely of wood, except for the hood over the eyes and the frame of the glass, which are both metal. The distance between the slide holders is about 6 1/2\". The slides were small at first, but by 1905, when the company was incorporated, they made educational slides that had one image on one side, and another on the other. The company employed photographers to take pictures, and when the company was sold, they had millions of images on cards. You can still buy them online. The brain would process this as being 3D. The educational slides were teaching geography, history, reading, science, social studies, and even a series for medical students. There were later stereoscopes for testing eye sight.
I am not sure of the age of this stereoscope, but it is from the early 1900\'s. It is more primitive looking than another I have seen dating to 1941. It is in good condition. The glass is perfect and nice and clean. The wood has graphics which are in great legible condition. The metal slide holders are a bit tarnished, but are solid. The slide holder slides easily to adjust the focus. One end of the bar has a very slight crack, hardly mentionable. All other condition issues are shown in my many pictures. However, there are no slides with this sale.
