Antique South Pacific Turtle Shell Armband ~ Trobriand Islands or Sepik River ~

A South Pacific tortoise shell bracelet or armband originating from the Trobriand Islands or Eastern Sepik River of New Guinea.
The whole surface is engraved with complex geometric designs and has remnants of the lime fill and red pigment. The engraving was done by an experienced artisan and is very finely executed.
The armband - bracelet is of traditional form and they were highly valued by the culture.
This piece has a beautiful worn patina and shows good age, probably early 20th century and possibly made with stone tools. Examples of this artistic quality from the early 20th century and in this condition are rare.
1940's or earlier.
This piece is in excellent ethnographically used condition. The designs are clear and beautiful showing traces of the lime fill and some red ceremonial pigment. Fine old glossy patina from wear and use. No losses or damage.
Purchased from an older collection of tribal art in Northern California.
