Russian Silver Gilt and Enamel document cover. I\'m not sure what this was used for exactly, but it looks like it was used to display a document or certificate of some sort. It is Russian silver gilt and enamel. There are feet on the back which are silver also, shown up close in the last photo. It is marked Adler A-K 1879 84 as shown in the fourth photo. The enamel is inlaid with silver also, and is in excellent condition, with no missing pieces that I can see. The Russian wording has to do with Emperor Nikolai, as far as I know, and says something about an orphanage. The oak leaf and crown decoration is the Royal Badge of Emperor Nikolai. The dates\"1830-1880\" marked on the silver could have some kind of 50 year commemorative significance but I\'m not sure. I have tried to show the amazing detail of the craftsmanship in both the silver and enamel in the photos. Any white spots in the photos are glare from my camera and are not missing pieces in the enamel. It measures 11\" x 16\". The front and back have come apart and are two separate pieces. The inside has some discoloration, the velvet is worn and dirty, and the silver needs cleaning, but this piece is probably a valuable piece of history and very worthy of restoration.
