TITLE: Old Sepik River harvest Sculpture 1950s

SIZE: 90cm by 17cmDESCRIPTION:

This interesting sculpture was collected in the Sepik River area of New Guinea in the early 50s. I was told it was used in harvest ceremonies where the pole at the base of the mask was put in a pile of yams to ensure a successful harvest in the following season. This carving shows good signs of use. Its design is deeply incised into the timber. Its unusual in that no ochre has been applied. The outer surface has been darkened by heat and the encised lighter timber highlights the design
