This is a good original T\'boli - Tiruary Tribe basket from Southern Mindanao region of the Philippines.
I have personally lived in this region for over a decade, however this basket was bought locally here in Florida.
Item is in outstanding condition, no loss, no breaks - made of smoked bamboo, the lidded basket retains its original strap, all in excellent condition.
While living in the Philippines I often wrote of the T\'boli tribe and their incredible history of making the finest weavings known throughout the world - the T\'nalak from what is often noted as a league of Dream Weavers.
Not only did the T\'boli live in the region of Lake Sebu, today they often live as they did centuries ago along the shores of this stunning area (long ago they were not known as T\'boli).
This basket is an outstanding example of their work, unsure of date but probably somewhere near the mid 20th century, possibly earlier.
I was living in the Philippines when one of the last true Dream Weavers, Lang Dulay passed away in Lake Sebu, her heritage and life are remembered always, and her passing was a symbol of a dying age of true Dream Weavers.
Though often duplicated, the T\'boli and the Tiruray live near one another, though the Tiruray Tribe is often associated with Magindanao and the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.
An expert in this material has noted this basket as being T\'boli - several early examples that I have personally seen myself had incredible weaving within the bamboo patterns - something that simply takes your breath away when you see them - you can see examples as noted by typing the information within Google Images.
This basket measures just shy of 8\" inches tall (not including the strap) and again is in excellent condition, no breaks, no repairs, well preserved and an excellent example of smoked bamboo work by this tribe.
