*These are made by women in Vanuatu, and presented as part of an elaborate marriage exchange ceremony. I am led to believe this practice occurs in outer regions of Vanuatu where western modes of dress and ceremony have not taken hold. The patterns apparently denote particular islands & villages, and the tassles of each cloth supposedly represent social standing. This textile is likely mid 20th century. The traditional exchange of objects in Pacific cultures is part of what they call \'Kastom,\' it\'s often elaborate and generally builds & maintains relationships between disparate communities.
