Old Vintage 1930s Halloween German Skull and Crossbones with Hat Beret Diecut:

Offered to you is a 1930s heavily embossed skull and crossbones Germandiecut. What makes this diecut particularly rare is the hat or beret it iswearing. The embossing is so well-done and detailed that the hat has the lookand almost the feel of leather. While this diecut may appear to be simply black andwhite in color, the teeth actually have a somewhat darker yellowish tint with aslight gloss, as opposed to the lighter, non-glossy skull and bones. Suchthoughtful design toward realism is one demonstration of the German Halloween artistry ofthe 1920s and 30s.

A diecut like this can be seen on page 178 of Mark B. Ledenbach’s new andhighly recommended third edition of “Vintage Halloween Collectibles.” On hisrelative scarcity index Mark indicates this diecut is “rare.” It is 10.75” highand 9.5” wide.

This diecut is in good condition. Despite its being 80 years old, thehat and teeth still have their original slight sheen. There are three pin-holesat the top-center of the hat (which can be used to hang it) with the tiniestbit of wear there. There is some creasing on the bones on each side of theskull’s chin (difficult to photograph) with slight weakness on the right side and a 1/8 inch split where the rightbones meet the chin. There is also one small red spot and some spots of surfacepaper loss on the ends of the bones. Nicely, there is very little wear to theskull and its hat. The contours of the skull and bones created by the embossingmake this a striking and attention-getting diecut. Doesn’t it look like itmight speak at any moment?
