Description

Offered here is a very early Bear fetish carving. It came from an estate collection and no information was available as to artist, tribe or age. The stone appears to be "Ojo rock"- a stone found near the Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico that is often seen in older carvings. There is also what appears to be a museum catalog number in black ink on the tummy. The eyes are drilled holes. See detailed notes on condition below. This piece has a nice old look to it and a playful stance!

SIZE: This carving is just under 2&3/4 inches in length. It\'s just over 1&1/4 inches high at the ears and up to 1&1/8 inch wide.

CONDITION: It appears that it may be missing a medicine bundle. There are 2 carved parallel grooves running around it\'s middle which might have been etched there to hold a bundle. It has a white substance on the bottom of the tummy and as mentioned above, there is an old ID number written in black ink on the tummy. There is a marking in black ink on the right rear side that appears to be an old ID number. There are numerous random white spots on the surface that appear to be natural occlusions in the stone.
