Often these black paper mats are referred to as “Philadelphia style” from the 1840s. France, of course, used paper mats, as did New Orleans, but in the U.S. most are thought to be from Philadelphia.
The woman holds her glasses, and holds open a page from her book.
SIZE. Sixth plate.
HOUSING. Original full case. Original spine is weak. Silk pad is very good!
CONDITION. Modern seals. Mold spiders, especially in the lower portion, at right, and the top of the far left. 2 sizeable spots on her neck.
APPEARANCE. Very good contrast. Straightforward.
