(Click to Enlarge)  Description This is a letter from a Union soldier, J F Philip, Co, B 161 Reg NYVol, 19th Army, Coprs1. The soldier is writing his father, Joseph Philip in Altay, NY. The soldier says \" 11 day since we started from Franklin. We Marched 5 days steady thense stoped at Washington one day for rest. Since then we have marched steady every day . It seemed tough at first by we soon got used to it......\"
\" Perhaps we will go up to shrevesport above here about 175 miles. The rebs are fortified. They were fortified here but the water raised and washed away their brest works so that our gun boats drove them away taking 300 prisoners, 11 cannon in course of the night. They followed then up and took 6 pieces of cannon, 300 prisoners. The land force went around had no fighting what ever but the Rebs fled to the woods in terror. \" he then goes on to tell about a Altay, soldier who was in the hospital, and other camp items.
