(Click to Enlarge) Description The letter is from a Frank Philip as soldier in the NY 160 vol. serving in La. The letter is datelined New Iberia, La, Dec 9, 1863. It was mailed in New Orleans on Dec 18, 1863 addressed to Joseph Philip in Altay, NY. (his father).
The letter starts off about saying they finally received a package. He says \" We got your box last night at 9 P M a pretty late hour but better late then never. The things were as well as we could expect under the circumstances. The box has been opended while at New Orleans by W w Smith of Watkins and it was not packaged up good. So when we cam to open it some 10 mice or small rats , but rather small rats I guess . they did damage among some things like the shirts. The shirts were almost spoiled eaten up and the other has eaten four holes through the heart. \' He goes on to tell what was spoiled and what was not. \" The biscuits were spoiled by some mice, the cherrys were spoiled, the butter was good, etc , etc. He goes on to say \" We came here a few days ago , our Col got us relieved because our regt was so small and had so much duty to do as we are once more common slobs in the army of lGulf belong to the brave Regt of Col G F Harrowers\"
