Here we have aquite exceptionaland quite lovelysilver itemofexcellent gauge and weight.Hallmarksarevery good indeed and struck to base near rim.
For reference of scale the actualplate is10.5 inches indiameter and 0.75 inch high.62 Hallmarked for London and dated1766-year letter l. MakersareSC IC-prolific platemakersof the period Sebastian and James Crespell-their mark is found on page 74 of Jackson's pocket edition.. Definitely one for the collectors! Itis a truly wonderfullate 18th century antique lot well worth owning.
The condition is excellentand allit needs is to be used.Its only flaw is a dent to the underside which is easily rectified by a good silversmith.
Thispiece isengravedwiththe order of the garterandalways hasbeen.HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE translates into ''evil be to him who evil thinks''.This plate might have been part of an ambassadorial service.
