Foroffer is an original, autographed (1920) William Butler Yeats BOOK of “PLAYS:Revised and Enlarged.” This is a signed volumeII, 1919 edition of W.B. Yeats’ “Poetical Works,” the second volume being the “DramaticPoems.” This book was signed on thefirst free endpaper opposite the original owner’s bookplate. Yeats was visiting Portland, Oregon lecturingand signing copies of his books. He hassigned the book with a quotation from his 1919 poem, “Tom O’Roughley.” He has signed the book as follows:

“Anaimless joy is a pure joy WB Yeats March 19, 1920.”

Thebook is from the library of noted bibliophile Frederick W. Skiff with Skiff’sbookplate. Skiff (1867-1947) was a notedbook and art collector who founded the Acorn Club of Hartford, Connecticut butlater moved to Portland, Oregon.According to research and academic papers I found, the poet Yeats wasvisiting Portland and lecturing in the Pacific Northwest at this time in Marchof 1920. The next day, March 20, Yeatswas presented a Japanese sword from the family of Junzo Sato in Portland,Oregon when lecturing there. This booksurvived a fire and is in rough condition after flames licked the paper of thebook. Dark stains from the flames affectthe page Yeats signed but they barely missed Mr. Skiff’s bookplate. His books were sold at sale in SanFrancisco, California in 1947 following Skiff’s death. This is a terrific book with an interestingstory. The autograph looks very nicedespite being small. The quotation iswonderful! Yeats (1865-1939) was abeloved Irish poet and playwright. Hewas one of the 20th Century’s most beloved writers! Please let me know if you have any questionswhatsoever.
