ORIGINAL 1862 ABRAHAM LINCOLN SIGNED DOCUMENT—CIVIL WAR

Scarce original partially-printed Military Commission Document signed by ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809-1865) as President of the United States; countersigned by Secretary of War EDWARD STANTON (1814-1869,) for the appointment of John N. Macomb to Additional Aide-de-Camp with the rank of Colonel, dated July 30, 1862; One folio page on vellum, measuring 17 1/2” X 133/4” with the Lincoln signature measuring 1” X 3 1/4”, in bold brown ink; with beautiful engraved illustrations of the accoutrements of war and a large bald eagle. A \"WAR OFFICE OF THE UNITED STATES\" embossed blue paper seal is affixed along the upper left side, and recorders docket signed by LORENZO THOMAS (1804-1875,) as Adjutant General, is in the upper blank left corner. IN VERY FINE CONDITION!

The document reads, “The President of the United States, To all who shall see these presents greeting: Know Ye That reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities of JOHN N. MACOMB I have nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate do appoint him ADDITIONAL AIDE-DE-CAMP WITH THE RANK OF COLONEL in the service of the United States: to rank as such from the FIFTEENTH day of MAY eighteen hundred and SIXTY TWO. He is therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the duty of ADDITIONAL AIDE DE CAMP by doing and performing all manner of things thereunto belonging And I do strictly charge, and require all Officers and Soldiers under his command, to be obedient to his orders as ADDITIONAL AIDE DE CAMP And he is to observe and follow such orders, and directions, from time to time, as he shall receive from me, or the future President of the United States of America, or the General, or the superior Officers set over him according to the rules and discipline of War, This Commission to continue in force during the pleasure of the President of the United States, for the time being. Given under my hand, at the City of Washington, this THIRTIETH day of JULY in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and SIXTY TWO and in the EIGHTY SEVENTH year of the Independence of the United States.
