Original art - cartoon humorous illustration in pen & ink. This complex piece features various images relating to the cartoonist\'s life in Brooklyn in 1912drawn by cartoonist AL PORTER.Great piece of cartoon history - the day to day life of a young aspiring cartoonist at the turn of the century!
Some of the images included are as follows:
1) Center image in circle is a view of DREAMLAND Amusement Park in Coney Island titled \"Coney Island As We Saw It\". Dreamland was founded by Senator William H. Reynolds in 1904 to compete with Luna Park. The Park burned in 1911 as a result of an electrical fire and was closed down. This image also contains the artist\'s signature, Al Porter, and is dated 1912.2) Image of 4 wailing women in a balcony with caption - \"We went to a Jewish Synagogue the other night...about all thewomen crying out loud...we thought it was funny\".3) Artist stands gazing at his drawing of a figure and says - \"That\'s a pretty swell drawing I\'ve got this week...I\'ll no. 1 in theconcore this time sure\". Next image shows him dejected with torn drawing and saying - \"Oh_____! I\'m gonna be a plumber\". There is a title beneath the drawing - Before and after a criticism fromBridgeman. This probably refers to well known artist George Bridgman who taught anatomy at the Art Students League in N.Y.4) Woman on knees in a padded cell of nut house talking to stuffed image of President William Taft - saying \"Oh, Mr. taft will you please send down an army to 69 Fort Gren Pl. and make those horrid boys stop playing tricks on me and making so much noise. Please kind sir\". Believe this may be directed at the artist\'s landlady (Mrs. Pastor).5) There are 3 vignettes involving the artist and another man (Don) - who may have been his roommate. In one the 2 are shown cooking a meal over sterno saying - \"Let\'em bring on theirsuffragettes - we don\'t need a cook, do we Al?\" and Al answers - \"Betcha not, Don\". Al has his arm around Don. In another one man is taking a photo of the other saying - \"Hold that pose a second please\", and the other returns - \"Yeththir\". The third simply shows 2 men in bed sleeping and an alarm clock is ringing wildly in background.6) Fellowinklower right corner says - \"Ain\'t no use looking at me, I\'m only here to fill up space. He\'s short on ideas. Gol durn, he has been ever since he fellin love\".Very good condition - light age left edge, 2 pin holes in corners, 2 corners slightly bumped. Measures approximately 13 1/2 \" x 22 1/2 \".
