Original Civil War Patriotic Cavalry Bell, as in The Civil War Encyclopedia:
$395.00

This is a very rare piece being offered which I acquired as partof a large Civil War collection - it is a patriotic Civil War Cavalry Bell. Itmeasures approximately 3” high with a diameter of 3 ½” across the bottom. It ismade of a heavy bronze with an intact iron clapper suspended on the interior. The outside is elaborately decorated with two spread-eagles with shields andsunburst designs surrounded by stars.

Whencavalrymen were camping for the night, they would tie up their horses. The bellwould be suspended from the horse through a leather strap so they could easilybe located in the dark. This would also serve as an alarm for any disturbances.

There isan example of this bell in The CivilWar Collector’s Encyclopedia, by Francis Lord (seepictures). That bell belonged to David M. Anderson of the 4th IowaCavalry; the 4th Iowaserved at Vicksburg and in the Georgia campaigns.

As Imentioned, this is a very rare piece and only the first one I came across inover 30 years. It is in very nice condition and has a great mellow tone whenrung. I doubt if you\'ll ever find another one.
