Up for consideration, sale, is this fine vintage wooden canteen, it measures approximately 6 3/4\" diameter by almost 3\" wide. The canteen appears to be made from a pine, spruce, light and light in color including the plug. I procured this piece at sale having come from a large Civil War collection near the Pittsburgh area. On one face is etched 1 MISS which one would assume would be either the First Mississippi Infantry or possibly Cavalry, as both did exist. The carry strap is missing but the leather retainers still intact and shows much age, as the canteen plug also appears to be made of pine and could possibly be the original. The wooden bands of possibly hardwood have a few cracks as the photos show, a very fine example of a mixture of backwoods ingenuity and great craftsmanship.
