W. A. Sillince was born in Battersea, London and studied at Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art and Central School of Art, London. He began work in advertising before becoming a freelance cartoonist, contributing to Punch (1936 - 1974, including whole page political cartoons as deputy to Leslie Illingworth) and The Bystander. Fougasse described Sillince as \'a humorist-stylist and, technically a most excellently equipped artist, with an enthusiasm for experiment.\' (Biographical Information from The Political Cartoon Society website)
