Philippine Religious Imagery

I am offering this group of \"Santos\" which I collected many years back during the 70s when I spent a number of years in Central Luzon , The Philippines.

During the 19th century while under Spanish rule religious images were very popular with the mostly Catholic population of the Philippines. Large , ornate and expensive pieces could be found in churches but every home rich or humble would have a family shrine with a Madonna , figure of Christ or Saint carved from wood and painted. Depending on what one could afford these Saints were made and sold by skilled carvers or if there was no money for such purchases someone in the village or the man of the house himself would carve a primitive folk art \" Santos \" . Toward the end of the 19th century mass produced statues made from painted plaster of Paris imported from industrialized Europe put an end to this traditional art form. During the 1950s local collectors started to show an interest in the old wooden statues and preserved many beautiful pieces in private and public collections. Prices and interest appreciated and by 1980 most of the material had disappeared from the art market.

A large crucifix from my personal collection. Worn polychrome paint and gesso with a loincloth made from tin. From my personal collection and purchased in Pampanga province in the 1970s. Condition as pictured and described.
From the bottom of the massive base ( mount Calvary ) to the top of the cross it measures 53 inches. The cross is 25 inches wide. The image of Jesus is 25 inches tall. Total weight is 25 lbs. For safe shipping purposes it would be best to ship this in three packages. One with the base, the second with the cross and the third with the carving of Jesus ( arms removed at the shoulders where they sort of plug into a mortise and tenon joint. ) This may sound a little complicated but I have done this before when I shipped it to the US. Putting it back together should be a simple task most everyone can accomplish. Free shipping US only. International shipping would be around $250 but not more than cost.
