These ornatesterling silver (tested) handled embroidery scissorsandtheir matching sterling sheath are 180+ years old. Leaf and scallopshelldesigns decoratethe shanks, bows andsheath.They were madein England in the early 19th century, probably by JosephTaylor of Birmingham.Englishsilversmithsdidn\'t mark small items (and have to pay duty on them) until requiredto by law in the early 1880s.

The bladesare tight with needle sharp points andthey cut beautifully to the tips. One side has a repair at the bottomof one shell, but they\'re sturdy and in otherwisenicecondition. Thesheath is a snug fit on the scissors. Thescissorsmeasure 3 7/8\" long (4 1/8\" in the sheath). They were probablyoncepart of aboxedset oftools. Silver scissors withthis pattern are shown on p. 108 of Gay AnnRogers\' book AnIllustrated History ofNeedlework Tools. Mine have the matching sheath though.I\'ve collected Taylor\'s scissors inthis style for years and this is a pair from my collection.
