This is a very beautiful and multi-colour vintage Enamel over brass Grotto hat (or fez) badge. It is highly detailed and glows like magic. At least 50 years old, it has two prongs in the back which allow one to attach it to a wide variery of garments and materials. The badge is in very good vintage condition with only some normal minor wear. No problems. It measures approximately 1 ½ x 1 ½ inches. No makers marking, but every inch as nice as the best products of “The Ames Sword Company”, “The Pettibone Bros”, “M. C. Lilley & Co” and “Horstmann of Philadelphia”. The Mokanna face is quite familiar to many, although fewer know who he was and what he represents. Many seeing his exotic image, assume him to be some type of Viking with an unusual set of Horns (in reality, Viking helmets had no horns). Interestingly, what we see here, are not Horns at all, but a Veil being parted in the middle to reveal the face of the Great Mystic Prophet. It is nonetheless ironic, that this Veil so much resembles Horns that even in some Masonic regalia catalogues, they are described as such. It is an unavoidable situation. Little is actually known about the origins of the historic Mokanna. The mysterious Prophet had originally been named Hakim and presented himself as an incarnation of Deity. Mokanna was also a Military Officer who led a particularly violent revolt in Khorasan (land of the Sun). He then hid out for three years, successfully dodging the vengence of the Royal Caliph and his armies. In a shocking climax during the year 779, Mokanna and his followers all commited suicide using poison after burning down the fortress. Legend has it that Mokanna was a powerful Magician with Intense Occult Powers. He was allegedly able to manifest a Strong Moon-like Ray of Light that could be seen for many, many miles ahead. THE MYSTIC ORDER OF VEILED PROPHETS OF THE ENCHANTED REALM The “Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm\" (aka: M.O.V.P.E.R.) developed as \"fun and Social\" organization for Master Masons in response to the Shrine, whose membership at the time was restricted to Masons of the 32nd Degee Scottish Rite and the Knights Templar of the York Rite (The Shrine is now open to all Masons). Also similar to the Shrine, the Grotto is engaged in philanthropy and likes to view itsel, not as a Masonic organization, but rather as an organization for Masons.
