Greetings. Offered for sale is the original art for the daily comic strip “OUT OUR WAY” drawn by John Robert \"J.R.\" Williams.

This daily comic strip panel was published on Monday July 2, 1928. The art paper measured approximately 14.5” tall by 13.25” wide. It is signed “J.R. Williams” and dated “7-2”. The strip was distributed by NEA Service, Inc. as per the copyright indicia.

This is the original art (pen and ink) for this comic strip, drawn by J.R. Williams. It is NOT a stat or a print or a proof.

This daily is, rather appropriately, subtitled “Why Mothers Get Gray”. The kids are thrilled to have seen a (coal burning) train pass directly below them. Mom is not so happy. Beautifully executed art and a funny gag by a talented cartoonist.

Comic Strip and Artist Information:

OUT OUR WAY was an American comic strip (panel) which ran from 1922 through 1977. At its peak, it ran in more than 700 newspapers. It was created and drawn for much of its run by James Robert “J.R.” Williams (1888-1957), who used his own life experience as the basis for the humor of the strip. Out Our Way was the umbrella title for several recurring themed strips which included Why Mothers Get Gray, Heroes Are Born, Not Made, The Worry Wart, Born Thirty Years Too Soon, The Bull of the Woods and others. It has often been claimed (including in Coulton Waugh’s The Comics) that Out Our Way was clipped and saved more than any other comic strip. The strips were collected into several reprint volumes.

Condition: The art is in “very good” condition on art board. The board is creased, horizontally, in five places (see photo of reverse). The creases are more visible from the back than from the front. Minor spots and stains to art. Pencil drawing visible in places beneath the inking. Prior owner stickers and notes on reverse. This original was previously in the Charles L. Howard collection of comic strip and cartoon art which was displayed at numerous schools in the Midwestern US during the 1940s. Old paper tape to reverse edges. Owned by an adult collector in a smoke free home.
