VERY RARE - PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN WROUGHT IRON & WOOD DECORATED FLAX HATCHEL - CIRCA 1774 - VERY NICE!!!Up for sale is: PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN WROUGHT IRON & WOOD FLAX HATCHEL - CIRCA 1774. This Pennsylvania German Wrought Iron & Wood Decorated Flax Hatchel ( Hetchel - Hackle - Hektel - Hekle - Flax Comb ) is one of the Largest and Most Decorative Flax Hatchels that I have Ever Found (Overall Length: 35-1/4\" x Width: 9-1/8\" x Height: 6-1/4\" - Flax Tines: 5-1/2\")... The Front of the Board has \"W D\" Carved into it at the Top and \"17 74\" Carved into it near the Bottom... This Flax Hatchel is Unsigned, as Almost All of them are, though with the Lovely Decorative Form, the Initials and the Date Carved into it, and the Obvious Quality of the Blacksmithing, it was Clearly a Gift to Someone Very Special!!! The Incredible Wrought Iron Tines and Cage is a Wonder of it\'s Own, Very Precise and Well Made, it is a Definite Tribute to the Blacksmith\'s Art!!! The Wrought Iron Hanger Attachment and Ring are Very Finely Crafted also!!! The Board itself, which may be Oak (It\'s Difficult to Tell...) has Darkened to an Almost Black Colour, though there are Hints of Red in some of the Crevices and Grooves, and has Nicely Molded Side Edges!!! The Flax Hatchel is in Incredible Condition and has Amazing Wear in All the Right Places from it\'s Intended Use and it\'s Early Age, and Still Has Some Minor Flax Fibers in among the Tines - I Have Not Cleaned it in Any way other than Dusting it... There are No Cracks, Chips or Scratches (other than Old Darkened ones...), or other Structural Issues, other than some of the Tines are Slightly Bent and Pulled, otherwise it is in Amazing Condition!!! I Used to Have a Very Large Collection of Flax Hatchels, with Many Interesting and Beautiful Forms Like this one, and have Sold Most of them Off, Except for my Favourites, of which this Beauty is one of them!!! So, I have Decided that I Need to Size Down my some of my Collections and am now Offering some of them up For Sale, there are Some Very Rare Forms and some Interesting Decorative Elements as well, so Please Do Take A Look!!! I Have Done Nothing to this Flax Hatchel other than Wipe the Dust Off of it from having been on a Display Shelf for Many Years (I Have had this Flax Hatchel for close to 15-20 years or so)!!!
